China orders Google to obey laws

China has warned US internet giant Google Inc not to stop its filtering of web search engine results in the communist country.

Yao Jian, a Chinese commerce ministry spokesman, said on Tuesday that Google must “respect” Chinese law, following a threat from the company to stop its censorship of some results.

Google has said it could abandon its Chinese-language search engine and completely withdraw from China following what it says were hack attacks and official pressure to toe the line.

The government tightly controls online content in a vast system dubbed the “Great Firewall of China”, removing information it deems harmful including pornography and violence, but also politically sensitive material.

“We have all along maintained a policy of opening-up and welcome foreign investments in China,” Yao told reporters in Beijing.

“But the prerequisite is they should respect and abide by Chinese laws.

“We hope Google will abide by the law, no matter whether it continues to do business in China or makes other choices.”

Yao said Beijing was “opposed to politicising business issues”, an apparent jibe at the US government and legislators for interfering in the issue and for criticising internet censorship in China.

Exit rumours

In January, Google threatened to abandon google.cn and maybe leave China altogether over what it claims were cyberattacks aimed at its source code and at the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

“Google has not stopped censorship. This is a rumour. We do not have any update to share”

Marsha Wong, Google China spokeswoman

The company has since continued to filter results on google.cn, but said it will not do so forever.

“Google is firm in its decision that it will stop censoring our search results for China,” Nicole Wong, the Google vice-president and deputy general counsel, told the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee last week.

“If the option is that we’ll shutter our .cn operation and leave the country, we are prepared to do that.”

Last week, Li Yizhong, the Chinese industry and information technology minister, warned the Google about facing “consequences” if it were to violate Chinese law by ending its filters, saying such a move would be “irresponsible”.

The Financial Times citing an unnamed source reported at the weekend that Google was “99.9 per cent” certain to move forward with plans to abandon google.cn.

Marsha Wang, a Google China spokeswoman, however told AFP on Tuesday that no changes had been made for now.

“Google has not stopped censorship. This is a rumour. We do not have any update to share.”

Microsoft puts final touches on Kumo search engine

By Justin Mann, TechSpot.com

Microsoft has failed to re-imagine search numerous times over the past few years, much to their dismay. Neither MSN.com nor Microsoft’s Live Search have managed to steal any considerable share away from Google, no matter how much money it is thrown at them, with people still overwhelmingly preferring the simple Google search page to the service-decorated Microsoft alternatives.

Redmond isn’t done for, though, and soon will be unveiling their new Kumo search engine, which has recently gone under internal testing. While nothing has been formally announced yet, rumors indicate that Kumo will be launched in just about a month.

Some details have been leaked regarding what the new service will offer, such as expanded searches that pull up relevant information about a search, as opposed to just sites containing the queried terms. With a huge ad campaign ready to launch and a new search engine ready to roll, Microsoft will try to take both Yahoo and Google’s spots. Will they be able to do either? Perhaps Yahoo, but when it comes to innovation, I think Google is still a step ahead of Microsoft in the web services department.

TinEye: the ‘go to’ search engine for images

TinEye fan Jeff left us a quick note to let us know that he spied TinEye in action over on Digg.  The post in question - Awesome Spaghetti Junction, what city is this? - included the image below and the simple question:

What city is this?

How can you find out more about an image such as this one when the image is all you have? Simple. Use TinEye.com. TinEye is the only search engine able to find your exact image in over a billion images crawled from the web.

Digg user ka9dgx used TinEye to find the image in a National Geographic Traveler story about Bangkok, Thailand.   TinEye also located the originalimage titled “The Veins of Bangkok” on Flickr, just one of the 26 different instances of this image found on the web.

And who took this shot? Trey Ratcliff, a part-time photographer that I first learned about back in August when I wrote this post about Copyright and Creative Commons.  You can see more of Trey’s amazing images by visiting his blog Stuck in Customs.

Click the image below to try the TinEye search yourself and discovery where else Trey’s image has travelled online.  Still need to get your TinEye account?Grab one here.

New search engine launched to find radio ads

New York—A new search engine service allows radio listeners to relocate online radio ads by searching for keywords or product information, as well as stations, dial positions and locations.

RadioAds.com said the service will help radio advertisers maximize their investments, since interested listeners may often want to re-listen to an ad and dig further into its details.

RadioAds.com, a free service to advertisers who register, will be available for listener searching beginning Nov. 27, the company said. It will be accessible from computer Web browsers and Web-enabled mobile devices.

Reports to advertisers include response rates and keyword search tracking that shows what words listeners use to find ads.
