Approximately 1.6 billion people using Internet every day. Of all these people, approximately 70% of them use Google as a search engine favorite. My question is simple: what would happen if Google ceased to exist?
This idea came to me today, when a power failure brought the Internet to Google crawl.
I’m sure the first answer that comes to mind is “OMG the world would collapse!” Well, I’m here to tell you that the world probably would not implode, but it would have serious consequences. Almost every major site on the Internet depends on Google in one way or another. Many places have almost all their traffic directly from Google, while others use services like Gmail or Google Adsense for their business. If something critical has happened with Google, it would be that these companies do? What would end users do? What would we all be?
Now some of us a small glimpse of what the Internet would be if Google suddenly disappeared. Each site that uses Google almost completely closed, because the external scripts are hosted on Google’s servers are inaccessible (this site included). Personally, I found myself lost and confused. My Gmail is down, and Google was down so I could not “Google” what was the problem. I could not Google Talk to ask any other web-heads, what was wrong either. I tried to use Live Search and Yahoo in vain. My only savior was the man “poor e-mail,” Twitter. Twitter ratchet with people tweeters Accident Google.
As long as I can remember when I knew nothing, I used “Google” it. There was once a time when you had a question, you had to go to the library, find a book and the book is the answer. Now all we need do is type a few keywords into Google and you have access to thousands of websites with answers. Google not only has given the greatest research tool, but they offer many other tools such as calendars, e-mail and what is essentially the equivalent of Microsoft Office. Anyway, we all know what Google has done, but where would we be without them?
Who would be Next? Would it be Yahoo or Bing? Without Google, we would lose image search, Google Maps, Google Analytics? A website is considered by the superiority where they are in the Google rankings. The Internet is a very different place without Google, for sure.
